comments on tuesday construed as antigay i don't do the gay guys, i don't do that. >> are there any on the 49ers. >> no. no gay guys on the team. >> reporter: the comments were at the superdome after the comedian about a former 49ers who was gay. >> question is, it just gets too much to the players and myself. >> reporter: coach harbaugh is defending his cornerback. >> he regrets that and that's know not who he is what he believes in. >> reporter: some of the people i spoke with on the street weren't quite convinced by the apology. >> whether or not that was a genuine reaction that he felt remorse or the pr folks for the team put together, i don't know. >> reporter: why were you skeptical? >> just reading his face and -- >> reporter: but sports commentator james brown doesn't think the controversy will have an impact on the game this weekend >> insensitive, that you don't tolerate nor should you but again, it will not have any
12:01 pm
adverse impact on the team at all. he has come back and apologized. >> reporter: culliver even said today he would welcome a gay teammate in the future. >> that's not what i feel in my heart. and i treat everyone equal in any type of way. so not how i feel. >> reporter: in santa clara, anne makovec, cbs 5. >> it is called operation red zone. it's a massive crackdown on fake sports merchandise being sold here in the bay area. i.c.e. agents intercepted $300,000 of counterfeit nfl merchandise. tonight at 5:00, how rampant the phony merchandise is on the days leading up to the super bowl. that's coming up tonight at 5:00. meanwhile, 9er pride is still sweeping the bay area. cate caugiran is live along the embarcadero where everywhere you look you see red and gold and that's exactly what mayor ed lee wants to see, right, cate. >> reporter: yeah, i don't think that's going to be too hard to see around the city. we have been sort of all around. san francisco is just
12:02 pm
overflowing with 49ers pride. we did a couple of stops along the city today just to check it out as we are days way from the big game. yesterday mayor lee declared that it would be red and gold weekend couraging fans and local businesses to show off their 49ers pride by sporting the team logo or colors. the city's devotion to the super bowl bound 49ers, local graffiti artist steve and tim have aptly named their 30-foot masterpiece the city bleeds gold. the mural was developed on a rooftop using rock climbing gear to get up that high. if this is any indication of what's going to happen on sunday, the 9ers may have something to worry about. this is the san francisco zoo's black rhino named boon. he was supposed to eat the baltimore ravens for breakfast this morning. zookeepers created the ravens logo out of boone's breakfast vegetables and then let him in
12:03 pm
to eat it but instead he ate the go 9ers instead and boone is named after the 49ers right tackle alex the rhino boone. we think he may have been confused thinking he was supposed to eat the winner. we are told by his keepers he has a bit of intuition. >> he is pretty attuned to his football. he really enjoys football. and i think his message today was that the 9ers are going to do it. >> zoo workers told me they have a bet with the maryland zoo should the 49ers win the maryland zoo will rename its ravens exhibit to the 49ers and if the ravens win, san francisco zoo will rename its boone exhibit for a month. the zoo is doing something special on super bowl sunday. parents, if you bring your kids 14 and younger to the zoo and they are wearing 49ers gear they get in for free. live in san francisco, cate caugiran, cbs 5. >> everyone's getting in the spirit. thank you, cate. meanwhile, new orleans and
12:04 pm
san francisco very different cities yes but in some ways very similar, as well. michelle griego found out many in san francisco say they owe san francisco for how the city looks today. >> reporter: when people around the world think of the vieux carre they think of scenes like this but it almost looks like this. >> we're not talking about a highway. we're talking about an act of barbarism. >> reporter: it would stand 40 feet tall and six lanes wide 3.5 miles of it running between the mississippi river and the city's iconic st. louis cathedral. [ church bells ] >> jackson square, the highway. gone. no access to the river. it's over. >> reporter: and the damage wouldn't end there. >> all you see in front of us, all these trees, all the grassy grounds are gone. this is an up ramp to an elevated highway. >> both the mayor, the governor, the city council, all wanted that elevated highway in the worst way.
12:05 pm
>> reporter: so a small group of new orleanians went to war. >> we were the underdogs. >> reporter: until reinforcements arrived from san francisco. >> they wouldn't accept a nickel. they came on their own to save the city of new orleans from an elevated highway based on their experience in san francisco with the embarcadero. never seen anything like it. >> reporter: the san francisco brigade's best weapon, one single image. >> we had a photograph of the embarcadero as it passed in front of the ferry building in san francisco. and we juxtaposed a drawing that we did of the vieux carre riverfront expressway elevated in front of jackson square and we sent this out as a christmas card all over america. >> reporter: with that shot, the project was defeated. the tide of urban freeways was turned. and new orleans was saved. >> we owe san francisco big time. >> reporter: as for the embarcadero freeway -- >> san francisco doesn't want
12:06 pm
to be walled in or walled up from our waterfront. >> reporter: a demolition project new orleans never had to bother with. >> for me to be able to sit on this balcony with cocktails in the afternoon and look out and know that that concrete up ramp is not here and that the trees are here, the grounds are here, it makes the old-fashioned taste better than it would ordinarily. >> sure, does. that's michelle griego reporting. defense secretary chuck hagel defending his record. former two-term republican senator faced a barrage of criticism about his remarks on the middle east. at today's hearings told the senate armed services committee he cannot be defined by a single vote or a quote. when we come back, why walking down the aisle might be good for your health and can you really burn 300 calories just by having sex?
12:07 pm
dr. kim exposes some of the popular weight loss myths coming up. hi, i'm meteorologist lawrence karnow in the cbs 5 weather center. we have a lot of hazy sunshine around the bay area. but these temperatures going to soar today. just how high? we'll tell you coming up.
12:08 pm
12:09 pm
one of the cars seen doing donuts on i-880 in o is it wasn't me. i wasn't the one driving. it was my car, yes, but i wasn't driving. >> the owner of one of the cars at the sideshow last week said he wasn't behind the wheel. the man from vallejo says it was his car and he was in a car meet in san leandro when somebody offered him big money for a test drive. >> dude asked me in i wanted to
12:10 pm
sell my car i told him yeah. he put $7,000 in high hand. i let him drive my car. >> the next thing you know he is on the highway doing doughnuts? >> i guess so. >> within how much time? >> i don't know. he was gone for like 30 minutes. >> then he says somebody told him where to find his car. it was purple that day but the owner says he painted it red because red is hot. still much more to come on that story, i'm sure. want to stay slim? some say ramping up your sex life might do it. in today's healthwatch, dr. kim does some myth busting. reporter: cindy struggles with her weight. >> in terms of pounds, how much weight would you like to lose? >> probably 25 to 30. >> reporter: new research shows many of the diet and exercise programs a 55-year-old has tried throughout her adult life really don't work. >> you're always advised not to lose a lot of weight too fast that it's going to be bad for you. in fact that doesn't appear to be true. >> reporter: in fact, in the
12:11 pm
long run, fast initial weight loss is a better way to go. that's one of several obesity myths revealed in a new study. in it, researchers looked at all the studies and shed the fat lies for facts. for example, if you make a small lifestyle change, like walking 20 minutes daily or eating two extra potato chips a day, it will add up to large long-term weight changes. >> you will eventually plateau and even the initial weight gain won't be a great as predicted. >> reporter: another myth that sex burns up to 300 calories. fat chance. a typical encounter lasts 6 minutes and burns only 21 calories. a man would have to have sex for an hour to burn 200 calories. he could burn more by watching the super bowl. other myths that breast-feeding protects the infant against obesity. it doesn't. the p.e. classes keep kids slim in they -- that p.e. classes keep kids slim. they don't. and that you should set realistic goals so you don't get frustrated. that's not true.
12:12 pm
the most ambitious plans to lose weight work best. >> and the study also says what does work restricting calories to lose weight and exercise to keep it off. a study out of finland finds being single is not good for the part. single people are about 60% more likely to suffer a heart attack. they are also at a higher risk of dying from heart problems. researchers don't know why but say healthier people have better habits and take medicine more regularly. >> i'm a healthy guy and we have valentine's day coming up not too far away from here. so -- >> there you go. >> there you are. >> let's go with the weather. let's take it there, shall we? >> let's do that. we have a lot of sunshine outside right now, a little bit hazy. a sea breeze out there and you can see some of the pollutants building up in the atmosphere toward san jose. it's going to be a great day out there as we'll see sunshine
12:13 pm
all the way to the coastline. maybe a patch or two of fog developing tonight in some of the valleys but no major changes coming over the next few days. i think the weekend is looking good now. over the bay we go. a little sea breeze there. the temperatures just beginning to warm up. 59 degrees in livermore. 59 in san francisco. and 57 degrees in san jose. high pressure the dominant feature here over the next couple of days. that ridge is going to sit here and that means all these storms going to ride right over the top of it so yeah, we are going to stay nice and dry and these temperatures going to be running above average in fact today maybe as much as 9 degrees above average in parts of the bay area. so with that in mind, not a bad day around the state either. 65 degrees expected in fresno about 66 and sunny into monterey bay 68 in redding and 49 degrees in lake tahoe. lots of sunshine in the high country. plenty of sunshine inside the bay. you will see 66 in san jose. 67 degrees in morgan hill. and about 61 degrees in pacifica. east bay temperatures up into the 60s, as well. lots of sunshine continuing
12:14 pm
throughout afternoon just a gentle sea breeze and the temperature not too bad. 68 degrees in oakland, 67 santa rosa, 62 stinson beach. looks like overnight lows still going to be chilly in spots especially in the valleys down to the 30s and the 40s. but by day we are looking good over the next few. tomorrow the same. weekend the same a few more clouds. middle of next week, clouds thicken up, we'll have to wait and see. it will be cooler anyway. >> did i hear a 70 this morning perhaps? >> it could be close. right up there 68 degrees or so. >> why don't you take the rest of the day off? >> i appreciate that. [ laughter ] our fresh grocer tony tantillo is in the house today. >> reporter: today's tip of the day is with blueberries. we best buyed them this week and i want to do a tip on them because right now they're coming in, imported from chile. they're great in quality, but if don't select them and store
12:15 pm
them right you'll lose all the nutritional value you can imagine on these blueberries. they are loaded with nutritional value. they could be the most nutritional of all. when you buy them, make sure when you look at the pint, dark color all the way around. very, very important. the bigger the better. free from any shriveling whatsoever. check the bottom right here. you want to be sure it's free from any moisture. that is a tell tale sign they are decaying and you don't want that. when you bring them home, put them in the refrigerator right away because they come from thousands of miles away. do not keep them room temperature for too long in the refrigerator. and only hold them for a day or two at the most. blueberries, the blueberry pancakes, blueberry pie. for this time of year, you can't beat it. i'm tony tantillo, your fresh grocer. and always remember to eat fresh and stay healthy. these are really sweet.

12:20 pm
that kind of an effort. >> reporter: sylvia and her friends' first victory was to stop berkeley's plan to double the size of the city by filling 2,000 acres of the bay. >> we didn't want to see anything as beautiful as our bay being filled in. >> reporter: another victory in the 1960s when governor reagan signed into law the first coastal zone management agency to protect the bay. >> and that is the model for all the coastal zone protection agencies in this country and around the world. >> reporter: because of sylvia and save the bay, public access to the shoreline increased from six miles in 1960 to hundreds of miles today. in fact, an eight-mile park stretching through berkeley and four other cities was recently named mclaughlin park in her honor. citizens for eastshore park call sylvia -- a force of nature. >> she has that very genteel diplomatic friendly friendly
